BRISTOL CONCERT WIND BAND

What follows is an attempt to describe the band to a discerning player. Our hope is that you will visit the Band and find out more for yourself.

THE MUSIC WE PLAY

It is judiciously chosen for the quality of its arrangement.
Care is taken to make it both interesting and varied.

THE STYLES OF MUSIC WE UNDERTAKE

Works by orchestral composers, from baroque to the present day.

"Light Music" such as the works of Novello and Coates from Britain, and Anderson and Farnon from abroad.

Music from Broadway and Hollywood.

Music from the "Big-Band" repertoire. The band prides itself in its idiomatic interpretations.

Arrangements that will, in general, be interesting, entertaining and satisfying, to audiences and Band alike.

THE CONDUCTORS

CHRIS HARRIS has had a lifetime’s experience playing and conducting every sort of music. He founded the band with a few friends in 1984 and it has watched it increase in size and stature ever since. The band bears the stamp of his considered music philosophy and continues to prosper and mature under his energetic and expert guidance.

His protégé and assistant, NICOLA WARE, who is also the Principal Clarinettist, brings a more youthful and alternative slant to the band’s musical values.

THE BAND’S SIZE

The band numbers about 45 players. A full complement would be 52 players.

THE MEMBERS

Many of the players are well qualified and/or experienced musicians. All of them perform above a prescribed level.

THE POLICY

The Band is committed to continuous improvement. For this reason, it seeks recruits who will both benefit from its established approach and will contribute to it future musical reputation.

THE SOCIAL ASPECT

Please be aware that besides its musical programme the band also promotes a social programme. We believe that better music emanates from a close knit group. During the year a number of musical events and the occasional trips are organised to help the members get to know one another that much better.
