Q. What differences would an orchestral player notice?
The main difference would probably be the choice of music.
We play a wide variety of music. Besides orchestral transcriptions, our programmes include music from the stage and screen and big-band or swing – in which we specialise by the way. What we seek are good interesting arrangements of just about anything.
Flautists and clarinettists would find themselves in large sections; playing much more but with much less emphasis on solos. Brass players too, would almost certainly find they have more to do.
As for engagements, we would probably perform more than you are used to, some of which would be out of doors.
